Two years have passed since the Phillips County Strategic Plan’s wheels started turning and Tuesday at the historic Malco Theater on Cherry St., a progress report was given before a packed house with Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe giving the keynote address.

According to KIPP Delta School Director Scott Shirey’s report to the public concerning last spring’s test scores, at nearly every grade level KIPP students outperformed both the local district and statewide averages on the Arkansas Benchmark Test.

A walking tour of this Mississippi River town’s past, present and future could start at Bubba’s Blues Corner at the south end of Cherry Street, a whisky bottle’s throw from the Mighty River. Bubba Sullivan has a little of everything in his shop, including a healthy dose of Helena blues history (free of charge) and old 45 rpm records (25 cents each).

The Delta Bridge Project announced today $400,000 in grants for KIPP Delta College Preparatory School in Helena-West Helena. These funds will provide space to accommodate classes for the next two years while KIPP Delta expands its program to serve students in grades 5 through 12.
