Estrategias para ahorrar dinero en las vacaciones de este verano

Por Charlestien Harris, asesor financiero jubilado de Southern Bancorp

July is peak vacation season and a time when many families take their summer trips. Planning a vacation doesn’t have to be expensive if you take time to do your research.

Here are some suggestions to help you keep a few extra dollars in your pocket while enjoying your time away.

1. Book Flights in Advance

If you know where you want to go, monitoring airfare prices early can save you money. For domestic travel, try to book flights at least one month in advance. For international travel, aim to secure reservations at least six months ahead of your trip. Fare alert tools can also help you save by tracking routes and notifying you when prices drop.

Another tip is to consider alternate airports. Flying into a secondary or regional airport near your destination may offer significantly lower airfare and rental car rates.

2. Be Flexible with Travel Dates

Flexibility can lead to substantial savings. It is estimated that nearly 50 percent of Americans plan to take a summer trip involving a flight, hotel stay, or car rental. With so many people traveling, having some flexibility in your schedule can help you find better deals.

In some cases, adjusting your travel dates by just a few days can result in significant discounts. The money you save may allow you to extend your stay or enjoy an extra attraction or excursion.

3. Avoid Charging Vacation Expenses to Credit Cards

With travel and fuel costs constantly changing, planning ahead is essential. Consider choosing local or lower-cost destinations that fit your budget. Doing so may allow you to pay with cash or save gradually in advance rather than relying on credit cards.

Avoiding credit card debt can help you steer clear of high interest charges. The earlier you decide on your destination, the more time you’ll have to save for the trip and potentially prepay lodging or other expenses.

4. Take Advantage of Public Transportation

This is a strategy I have personally used, and it works. Public transportation can help you avoid expensive rideshares and taxi fares. Local buses, trains, and even walking can significantly reduce transportation costs.

Most public transit systems provide schedules online, at stations, or in printed brochures. If you’re unfamiliar with the area, don’t hesitate to ask a local resident or transportation employee for assistance. This cost-effective option can help you save money for other vacation expenses.

5. Dine Smart

Dining smart means taking advantage of free hotel breakfasts and purchasing snacks or groceries from local markets instead of eating out for every meal. Preparing some of your own meals can go a long way toward stretching your vacation budget.

Many vacation destinations also offer seasonal discounts, coupons, and specials. Depending on where you’re traveling, shopping at local farmers markets can be another affordable way to enjoy fresh food while saving money.

6. Look for Free Entertainment

Free entertainment is always budget friendly. Not only can it be enjoyable, but it also eliminates admission fees and cover charges.

As you research your destination, look for free museum days, local parks, festivals, and walking tours. You can also contact the local tourism board or Chamber of Commerce to learn about free attractions and events available during your visit.

Vacation time should be a chance to rest and recharge. However, without careful planning, a trip can create unnecessary stress and financial strain. By following these tips, you can stay within your budget while still enjoying quality time with family and friends.
