Southern Bancorp opened its doors on Cherry Street on Jan. 17, 1931 as Phillips National Bank. Seventy-eight years later the bank is still going strong thanks to loyal customers, local management and decision making by a local board of directors.

Southern Bancorp is heavily involved in community events. The employee member Community Corps normally has volunteers at all community events including the Wild Hog Music Fest, the Blues festival, the Fishing Rodeo, and the MDA Gold Tournament.

Bank employees always enjoy participating in the American cancer relay for life. Employees reaised over $4,000 for this year’s event by having two hamburger cookouts, a bake sale and an online auction for employees.

Southern Bancorp likes to serve the community in other ways too. The bank sponsors two scholarships at PCCUA that are funded by employees “dress down days.” Employees pay $2 to wear jeans on Fridays and the money is not lonely used to fund the scholarships but to also support the bank’s Pays for A’s program allowing Phillips County students to get recognized for earning good grades.
