Eduardo Ruben Ochoa, Jr., MD, FAAP, is a pediatrician, professor, and long-time advocate of health equity, particularly for the Hispanic and Latino communities of Arkansas. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), a tenured Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), and practices primary and complex care at Arkansas Children’s Hospital’s (ACH) Southwest Little Rock clinic. Dr. Ochoa is an alumnus of the Open Society Institute’s Soros Advocacy Fellowship for Physicians. A past President of the Arkansas Chapter of the AAP, he received his AB in Religion from Princeton University and his MD from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. He completed residency at UAMS, was Chief Resident at ACH, and joined the UAMS faculty in 1999.
Dr. Ochoa began the Latino Clinic for special needs children in May 2009, the West Little Rock Primary Care Clinic in 2010, and the Southwest Little Rock Clinic in 2017. During his tenure as Community Pediatrics Section Chief, three new clinics, including two school-based sites, were opened. He is also Executive Director of the Head Start and Early Head Start programs in Pulaski County. UAMS has been the grantee of these programs for over 25 years and they currently serve over 400 children. His research interests include social determinants of health, child health disparities and community engagement. He is the Little Rock Principal Investigator for Children’s HealthWatch, a multi-site network of pediatricians and public health and policy experts working on the frontlines of child health to address inequities such as food, housing, income and energy insecurity.
