The Arkadelphia City Board of Directors will meet today at 5:30 p.m. in the Town Hall boardroom.

The first item of business is the consideration of an ordinance assessing a five-mill tax against real and personal property in the city limits. This is a yearly ordinance that is adopted and given to the Clark County Quorum Court before the first November meeting each year.

The Economic Development Corp. of Clark County met for its first time with a 15-member voting board Tuesday.

Business carried on as usual after the new members were sworn in by Circuit Clerk Martha Jo Smith. Chairman Euodias Goza said the new voting board will be the “same group as we have been, but instead of five voices, we have 15.”

The last payday lender has left Arkansas, according the organization that led opposition to a business plan that routinely charged triple-digit interest rates for short-term loans.

Arkansans Against Abusive Payday Lending announced Tuesday that First American Cash Advance, the last payday lender to operate in the state, closed its last Arkansas store on July 31.

LITTLE ROCK—Arkansans Against Abusive Payday Lending (AAAPL) formally announced today that the last payday lender has left Arkansas, declaring victory on behalf of all those victimized by a predatory industry that drowns borrowers in triple-digit interest rate debt.

AAAPL hosted a news conference today near a former payday lending store in Little Rock once operated by First American Cash Advance. First American, the final payday lender to cease operations in Arkansas, closed its last store on July 31. AAAPL released its latest independent research report, which highlights developments over the last year that ultimately culminated in payday lenders leaving the state for good.

Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe on August 5 addressed UCA’s 22nd Annual Community Development Institute Central.

Beebe discussed the important relationship between education and economic development as part of the Arkansas Works Summit initiative. CDI hosted the Faulkner County meeting of the Arkansas Works Summit initiative, which is the 15th county meeting to date. Following Beebe was a presentation by Phillip Baldwin, President and CEO of Southern Bancorp, addressed their community development work in Clark and Phillips Counties.
